Ferndale Tribute sculpture on Woodward breaks ground

As if Ferndale couldn’t get anymore artsy, it’s erecting the first 30-foot-tall Woodward Tribute sculpture in September.

The latest piece of public art on Woodward is set to come on the median line late this summer.

Work on the first Woodward Tribute sculpture in Ferndale begins this week and will finish up a little after Labor Day. An unveiling for the piece is scheduled for Sept. 18.

The sculpture is a 30-foot-tall, solar-powered column that will be installed on Ferndale’s north side on the median at Cambourne Street. Its design is inspired by and pays homage to the Woodward Dream Cruise.

This is expected to be the first of many public art projects slated to appear along Woodward Avenue. The goal is to tell Woodward Avenue’s story and increase tourism.

Detroit, Berkley and Pontiac are also planning to build their own pillars along Woodward as part of the Woodward Avenue Action Association’s Tribute Project.

The series of 30-foot-high interpretive themed columns will be made mainly of glass and concrete. They will be internally illuminated to help depict visual elements of Woodward’s past, present and future, such as its history in autos, technology and music.

A portion of National Scenic Byway grants will fund the program.
