The Wyandotte City Council is looking at setting up four Neighborhood Enterprise Zones that would cut taxes significantly to help spur sales in some housing developments in the city.

The City Council approved a June 4 public hearing on the idea Monday night. The four zones would encompass five new developments, including Labadie Park, Vinewood Village, City Garden, The Oaks and a 17-unit development at Biddle and Orchard.

The Neighborhood Enterprise Zones would lower taxes on the new buildings to 16.86 mills from the normal city millage of 47.8 mills, a 65-percent reduction. The tax cut would be in effect for 6 to 15 years. The City Council determines the length of the cut. The NEZ’s are normally established in urban areas in need of redevelopment. The area proposed for the Wyandotte zones include an old factory site and vacant lots.
