Over a million gallons of Biodiesel used in Wayne County

Biodiesel was introduced to Wayne County as an alternative form of fuel in June 2006. Since then biodiesel use has topped one million gallons with most of it here in Wayne County going toward the Department of Public Services fleet.

In 2005, Global biodiesel production climbed to 3.8 million tons. About 85 percent of the fuels production came from the European Union, although plants are begining to pop up across the United States.

Biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel that can be made from a variety of sources, including vegetable oils, fats and greases. Its use sharply reduces tailpipe emissions and is safer for the environment than petroleum-based fuels.

Ficano says biodiesel is important as one alternative-fuel choice because threats to the Earth are real and that remedies must be put in place.
