Which come first, residents or retail? It’s the eternal chicken and egg question for planners and developers. In Canton’s Cherry Hill Village development, the answer is the residents came first and the retail is coming around the corner.

The developers behind the Uptown Ridge section of that new urbanist development at Cherry Hill and Ridge roads are gearing up for construction on a line of retail establishments, featuring everything from a pub, bank and office building to mixed-use retail and residential structures.

“It’s going to have the same architectural charm as the other buildings in Cherry Hill Village,” says Peter Stano, one of the co-developers behind the project. “They will all be free-standing buildings.”

Each building will be designed for two stories. For instance, the pub and grille, which is the first structure planned to be built, will be feature 5,000 square feet of space along with an outdoor seating area. There is also a 7,200-square-foot boutique storefront with retail on the ground floor and residential space above. A 4,000-square-foot bank and another 10,000 square foot building are also planned.

To make all this happen, the developers are paying the township $27,000 to move a historic home on the 4.5 acres of land to a nearby property so it can be restored. Another home on the property will also be razed to make room for the development.

Before anything can happen, however, the project must be approved by the township board. A public meeting for conceptual approval on the development is set for Nov. 19 at the township hall, 1150 Canton Center Road South.
