Forbes browses Glocal’s online community forums

It takes a lot of time to sift through info-blasts worldwide. But now a start-up is helping to tailor your interests to your own backyard.  Excerpt: "Launched in 2011, Detroit's  Glocal  offers users a tailored local experience via online community forums. It aims to counter a loss of connection with local community that many see as a negative effect of the global hyper-connectedness driven by social media. Techonomy spoke with Glocal President Lincoln Cavalieri about the importance of zooming in on what's happening in your own neck of the woods. How does Glocal work? It's a hyper-local community forum for over 150 cities around the world. Members of a local community create categories and forums, write articles,   post videos, and link to local deals, restaurants, events, and such. We also have classifieds, so you can sell your bike and your boat. The community defines what's important to it, and moderators make sure all content is appropriate." More here.

Allied Printing to improve technology, change ownership

Allied Printing is shifting its growing business in Ferndale from its longtime owners to a small group of longtime employees, including the transfer from father to daughter. Paul Zimmer and Robert Straub are transitioning the 60-year-old business' ownership to Dave Bader, Margaret Fitzgerald, Elly Chichester, Tony Pelc, Jill Straub and Greg Balan over the rest of this decade. For Jill Straub, daughter of Robert Straub, taking over ownership fulfills a longtime goal of hers since joining the company after she graduated from Michigan State University in 2002. "This is pretty much all I have known and what I wanted to do," says Jill Straub, sales executive for Allied Printing. Allied Printing has grown from 12 employees and one building in 1971 to 95 employees and the occasional intern in four buildings that cover 100,000 square feet of warehouse, production and corporate office space. It has hired a handful of people over the last year, mainly in its digital department. Allied Printing is a full-service printing company that specializes in digital printing, packaging, direct mail, program management, fulfillment, and web-based marketing services. The company has experience 11-percent revenue growth in 2012, thanks to investments it has made in technology for its printing and e-commerce services. "We'd like to see the next few years follow that growth pattern," Jill Straub says. "We'd like to improve our technology to increase the demand so that people will want to come to us." Prime Office Innovations adds staff as it shifts biz to software, services

Prime Office Innovations got its start selling copiers and printers to businesses. A decade later the company has expanded its product offerings to not only the services associated with these machines, but also the software they use as well. "With the advent of applications we're migrating more toward software," says Kevin Macklem, co-owner of Prime Office Innovations. That means that today the Macomb Township-based primarily offers managed print solutions, i.e. products and services that span both hardware, software and services. It's also working on digitizing records and other paperwork for businesses. The growth from that product expansion has allowed Prime Office Innovations to hire three people over the last year. It now employs a dozen people and one intern thanks to 15-20 percent growth each year for the last few years. "I'd like to see us continue to grow at that pace, which is at a double-digit pace," Macklem says. Blue Wheel Media adds clients, aims for 40 hires

Trevor George didn't start out looking for a job after graduating from the University of Michigan with a bachelors in general studies. He made his own job by starting Blue Wheel Media. The Troy-based Internet marketing agency started with two people six months ago. Today it employs half a dozen and an intern. George expects to add 40 employees by May with the help of some new clients. "One big fish, and we're close to landing a couple," George says. He started Blue Wheel Media with the idea of creating an overall branding experience for clients, instead of focusing on one niche section, such as social media or search engine optimization. "We believe that if a brand wants to garner credibility it needs to leverage several channels," George says. "You have to tailor your brand across several different channels."
