TV reality show pilot and “Detroit Rubber” web series to be shot in Metro Detroit

And the latest round of film incentives goes to a reality show about the training of pro athletes and the second season of Detroit Rubber. Excerpt: "The television pilot project is a reality show following a Michigan gym owner and his staff as they work to train professional athletes and the middle-aged dads that work alongside them.   Shooting in Plymouth, the project is being directed by Michigan native Chris Farah with Mike Farah and Anna Wenger producing.... Detroit Rubber follows Rick Williams and Roland “Ro” Coit, owners of the Royal Oak sneaker shop Burn Rubber and boutique two/eighteen. The show will continue to highlight these Michigan entrepreneurs as they balance family, a growing business and day-to-day struggles." More here.

Michigan-based MJR building $16M theater in Troy

Oak Park-based MJR Digital Cinemas is opening its next theater in Troy, creating jobs and drawing an estimated 800,000 visitors annually to the spot that will also introduce a new concept in movie-watching. The MJR Troy Grand Digital Cinema 16 will be located at the corner of Maple and Livernois roads and house 16 screens and 3,200 seats. Ground will be broken on the 74,000-square-foot facility in September, and  opening day is expected by late April 2014. The $16-million project will also dedicate one of its theaters to the MJR Epic Experience, a new concept that focuses on designing a theater around extra comfort and a higher level of customer service. The 460-seat theater will have a larger screen and larger, overstuffed leather seats with more space between seats. The Epic Experience Theater will also come with the MJR Studio Bar & Lounge. “Troy has great demographics and is the perfect community in which to build a brand new and truly state of the art facility,” MJR CEO and founder Michael Mihalich says.   The Troy Grand will be MJR's ninth theater in southeast Michigan. “The city of Troy is so proud to partner with MJR in transforming the Maple Road-Livernois corner into a first-class entertainment destination,” Mayor Dane Slater says. Digital media projects targeted for state incentives

More state incentive money is propping up digital media projects. Animation work for "Don Cheto" and "Series One" will be handled by Southfield-based Pixo Entertainment. Excerpt: "Digital media, including animation, post-production and video game development, has tremendous potential for growth here in Michigan," said Margaret O'Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office.   "The fact that these projects chose Michigan companies to do this animation and post-production work is a testament to the talent we have here in the state." Don Cheto  –  First Cycle  is an animated web series based on the popular Spanish-language variety radio program "El Show de Don Cheto," featuring Mexican entertainer and radio star Don Cheto.   The program will air on the NuevOn YouTube channel.   Southfield-based Pixo Entertainment has been tapped to provide the animation on for the series..." Arab Film Fest opens January 24

From the press release: "Mideast Film Biz Forged in Cauldron" (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118063673/?refCatId=19) was the headline in the Dec. 17, 2012 edition of the entertainment journal Variety, on a report about the burgeoning Arab World film industry and how it’s being affected by the Arab Spring uprisings.  Fans of Arabic-language movies and adventurous filmgoers seeking new perspectives can experience this phenomenon for themselves when recent films from Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar and UAE get rare U.S. screenings during the 2013 Arab Film Festival at the Arab American National Museum, 13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, Mich. Jan. 24-26, 2013. While most titles are in Arabic, all films include English subtitles, making them accessible to a general audience. Check out the film program and get tickets here.
