Affirmations was formed in 1989 as Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center to serve the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning individuals in southeastern Michigan. The group recently changed its name to just Affirmations to be more inclusive of all people.
In 2003, it launched a capital campaign to raise $5.3 million to fund a new center so it could move out of the converted apartment complex it was in.
