Ash Stevens has long been one of Wayne County's most prestigious pharmaceutical manufacturers, and on July 19, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano was on hand to celebrate the beginning of a five year, $20 million expansion at its Riverview facility.
On November 20, 2009, Turkia Awada Mullin, Assistant Wayne County Executive and Wayne County's Chief Development Officer, was honored as the YWCA's 2009 Woman of the Year, the highest honor given by the YWCA of Western Wayne County.
Together, Wayne County's life sciences and health care businesses currently employ more than 100,000 people, with a payroll of $5.64 billion. Nearly half of Southeast Michigan's employment in healthcare research and manufacturing is by companies located in Wayne County, and Wayne County employs half of all area residents working in the life sciences industry (manufacturing and R&D).
The MMTC's Southeast office will host, in conjunction with Wayne County's Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE), a series of no-fee manufacturing oriented events at the Downriver Community Center (Southgate, MI).
The strengths of Wayne County's life sciences industry were on full display last month at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, the biotechnology industry's biggest event. This year, the four-day convention drew nearly 15,000 scientists and entrepreneurs from around the world.
