The Go Comedy! Improv Theater is getting closer to opening.

“I always thought downtown Ferndale was a perfect spot to open a theater,” says Pj Jacokes, producer of Go Comedy! Improv Theater. “It’s got a really nice downtown vibe without being pretentious.”

The new comedy club will go in a newly refurbished building on East 9 Mile Road, about a 1.5 blocks from Woodward. Jacokes and his partners took the old Secretary of State building across the street from Ferndale’s police station and returning it to its original raw feel, exposing original features like brick walls.

The new theater will seat about 80 people (give or take a dozen) and feature a full bar. It will also serve snack food and the developers are working with local eateries to see if they can bring in a wider selection of food for the customers.

“Anyone who went into there to have their license renewed is going to be amazed at what we did,” Jacokes says.

The comedy club will feature mostly improv and sketch comedy. Think “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” style of comedy. Jacokes has worked at Second City when it was in Detroit and Novi, Planet Ant in Hamtramck and the now-defunct Improv Inferno in Ann Arbor.
