Oakland County just got a powerful ally in its bid to build an all wireless community. County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced during his State of the County speech that Microsoft Corp. had signed on as part of the corporate team behind Wireless Oakland, the county’s effort to provide free basic wireless Internet service everywhere in Oakland County.

The first stages of wireless installation began in Troy in early January. More pilot areas will go live by the end of April in Birmingham, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pontiac, Royal Oak, and Wixom. All areas of the county should have service by early 2008.

Wireless Oakland will offer Wi-Fi service free at 128 kilobits per second, at no cost to the county. Companies financing the system will generate income by selling faster service tiers.
