Sterling Heights breaks ground on $25m public works facility

Sterling Heights has started construction on a new Department of Public Works facility and expects the $25 million facility to be completed in just over a year.

Department of Public Works Director Michael Moore says the new building on 18 Mile Road will enable the city to increase efficiency and better protect public assets form Michigan’s harsh weather conditions.

“Increasing the square footage of the building will allow us to store vehicles and equipment inside the facility,” says Moore. 

The premises will be home to a new salt brining system, aimed at enhancing snow removal operations, and the covered storage areas will be brought up to Michigan Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy standards.

City officials gathered in September to cut the ribbon on the construction site and the facility is expected to be open to the public in late 2020. Moore admits it’s been a “long process” but says the new construction would provide a better quality of life for both workers and residents.
