In the wake of a destabilized economy and weakened auto-industry, Michiganders have quickly learned that a healthy economy is one that is varied. As focus is now placed on different ways to encourage the growth of the state’s economy, Green Light Film Productions, a locally-run film company, is looking to develop Michigan’s stake in the nation’s bustling movie industry.
Operating out of offices on Northville’s historic main street, Green Light Productions is an established production services company offering local and national filmmakers the prospect to revel in the economic opportunity Michigan has to offer the film business. Green Light aids in the development of movie productions from an initial story idea, through scriptwriting, shooting, editing and audience distribution. From the financial end, Green Light will assist in finding competent and committed investors to fulfill that project’s budget.
Green Light’s list of clientele has grown as a result of Michigan’s Film Production Incentive program, which was passed by the legislature in the spring of 2008. The Michigan Film Production Incentive Program provides a tax credit of up to 42 percent of the amount a filmmaker spends while producing a motion picture in Michigan. With an incentive unparalleled to any other states’, Michigan has quickly garnered the attention of Hollywood filmmakers.
Despite recent criticisms of the film incentive, Green Light Productions believes Michigan lawmakers need to continue to show unwavering support to instill confidence in the minds of Hollywood’s elites. Similar to any good business-model operating under a three or five year plan, Green Light believes the incentive needs time to develop to its full potential. With the incentive barely a year old, Green Light believes government officials need to show patience as Hollywood execs begin to realize Michigan’s potential to be a great backdrop for movies along with our as our talented and creative labor pool for movies.
Over the next year, Green Light Productions is slated to co-produce five major projects – an opportunity the company believes will provide revenue for the state and a paycheck for hundreds of Michiganders.
“It is all very exciting”, says CEO Kevin Weedmark, “The drive felt throughout Michigan to have filmmaking be a permanent fixture here is contagious.”
