Film industry looks poised to explode – in a good way

It hasn’t taken long at all for the movies to grab a hold of Michigan. So, of course, the movie making industry was a topic at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference. The verdict: The tax breaks are so good for filmmakers that they’ll flood Michigan bring projects and jobs.

It hasn’t taken long at all for the movies to grab a hold of Michigan. So, of course, the movie making industry was a topic at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference. The verdict: The tax breaks are so good for filmmakers that they’ll flood Michigan bring projects and jobs.

At first, the jobs will be the kind you get when the movie making circus comes to town, according to Bob Brown, producer at Farmington-based Charity Island Pictures, and Jay Tobias, production manager on The Saint, a TV pilot now filming in Michigan. That means caterers, hotels, temporary rental housing. 

But eventually, Michigan could see significant numbers of jobs in video production and related technologies. Grand Rapids Community College is already teaching such courses, and it’s expected to be followed by other Michigan colleges soon, according to Lisa Danesok, senior vice president of communications at the Michigan Economic Development Corp.
