Warren Cousino High School student Mike Rouse has won first place in a national design competition for his “Solar-Powered Street Sign.”

The design modifies a common street sign with the addition of a solar collector and lights mounted above the sign. The sun charges a battery during the day and uses the stored power to run the lights illuminating the sign at night. Using only the power of the sun, the goal of the design is to enable drivers to view street signs more safely and easily at night.
