New hotness: Hi-tech solar-powered farmer’s market

Ann Arbor is gearing up to refurbish its farmer’s market later this year. The $950,000 in upgrades includes everything from new sheds to solar panels to generate electricity for the market and the adjacent Kerrytown Market.

The location has good solar access and is highly visible in one of the city’s most popular destinations. An educational component would also be added to teach the public about the value of solar energy. The city is applying for a $50,000 state grant to install the 10-kilowatt solar-panel system on top of the market.

The City Council is set to choose a firm to manage the project on June 4 with work beginning later this year and wrapping up in mid 2008.
