Downtown Pontiac housing study due to be released in August

The Pontiac Downtown Development Authority expects a study on housing realities and possibilities for the downtown area to be finished in August.

Lots of people love to have a good time in downtown Pontiac, but city officials hope a new downtown housing study will help entice developers to build lofts and condos so people can live there, too.

The Pontiac Downtown Development Authority expects a study on housing realities and possibilities for the downtown area to be finished in August. The study will help city officials put together a list ranking downtown buildings and parcels ready for development. City officials will use these rankings and a list of economic incentives to attract developers to rehabilitate structures and build new ones for homes in downtown Pontiac.

Although downtown Pontiac has a thriving nightlife with clubs, such as Clutch Cargo’s and Tonic, and a strong business presence, such as the recent renovation of the Waterman Center, it still lacks downtown housing options that are taking off across the rest of Metro Detroit. Most downtown residents live in renovated lofts and homes they built themselves. There is no major downtown condo or loft project, but city officials hope the housing study will help change that.
