Local alternative energy leaders are trying to push through a renewable portfolio standard (RPS), which ensures that a certain percentage of energy used by electrcity companies comes from renewable sources.
This RPS bill has already been approved by the state's House but the Senate has yet to follow suit.
The bill would help gain a lot of lost ground in the renewable energy sector for Michigan, which is lacking compared to other states.

Pruss called for the creation of alternative energy "centers of
excellence" throughout the state. It's a concept first introduced by
Granholm in her State of the State address earlier this year.
The centers of excellence would be anchored by major alternative
energy companies that could attract other energy firms to locate
operations in the surrounding areas.
Granholm has supported the approval of an RPS and believes it would create jobs.
Pruss said Michigan is poised to capitalize on growing demand for
wind power in particular. He said there is a lack of manufacturing
resources in the United States to keep up with demand for wind turbines
- and Michigan can meet that need, he said.
