Green party: 50th annual St. Patrick's parade marches through the heart of Corktown

March 16 2 p.m.

Ay, take a whiff: that's spring in the air filling your lungs, with temperatures expected to creep into the 40s and stay there all week. Better proof yet is that the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day looms just days ahead. That means it's parade time in Corktown, the historic Detroit neighborhood settled a few centuries back by Irish lads and lassies from County Cork.

And what a parade it is! Ethnic social and cultural clubs are represented, as are marching bands from the Detroit Public Schools and elsewhere. Thousands of people line Michigan Avenue from the edge of downtown and into the heart of Corktown west of 14th St.

The parade has been sponsored by the United Irish Societies in metro Detroit for a whopping 50 years. There is still time to get a spot in the march. Anyone interested in participating should feel free to contact the United Irish Societies here for details as to the application process, fees, rules and regulations.

Of course, the fun does not end with the parade. There's plenty more to be had at Corktown bars and restaurants, conveniently located on or just off the main route. The daylong event gets the Model D five-star seal of approval.

The parade is Sunday, March 16 at begins at 2 p.m. It ends when all the taps run dry.
