Green party 51: St. Patrick's Parade marches through the beating heart of Corktown

March 15 2 p.m.

Everyone is Irish this Sunday, March 15 on Michigan Avenue in Corktown. And that means you.

Sponsored by the United Irish Societies in metro Detroit for 51 years, the parade promptly and proudly steps off at 2 p.m. The route cuts throough the heart of Corktown, so designated for its history as home to many early arriving immigrants from Ireland and more specifically, County Cork.

Ethnic social and cultural clubs are represented, as are marching bands from the Detroit Public Schools and elsewhere. Thousands of people line Michigan Avenue from the edge of downtown and into the heart of Corktown west of 14th St.

Of course, the fun does not end with the parade. There's plenty more to be had at Corktown bars and restaurants, conveniently located on or just off the main route. There are live bands we are already lining up to see at the fab Slow's Bar-BQ. The daylong event gets the Model D five-star seal of approval.
