Biosensors sound like something out of the TV show The Six-Million Dollar Man. The very word generates images of the little computer chip implants that allow Steve Austin and Jamie Summers to jump higher or run faster.

Well, maybe one day, but right now that’s not the focus of ThreeFold Sensors/IA, Inc. The biosensors they produce focus on the detection and rapid response to human health problems.

The company was founded in 1991 under the name IA, Inc. Back then, they specialized in the development of artificial intelligence, clinical software, insulation materials, and biosensors. In 2000 they dropped most everything to focus their energy on the biosensors, thus ThreeFold Sensors was born.

The company has 14 people currently employed in southeast Michigan, adding six last year and planning to employ another eight within the next two years.

They are still in what CEO Judith Erb calls the "pre-revenue stage," while working through FDA testing. However, ThreeFold Sensors was recently selected to represent Michigan at the 2008 World’s Best Technologies Showcase in Texas in March.
