When you double in size in just two years, that's pretty much the defintion of growth.
Ann Arbor-based
Solidica
has been around since 1999 but the last 24 months have been particularly good for the wireless systems developer. If things keep apace with recent successes, they expect to grow their staff by another 50%.
Solidica also recently won $1.6 million contract from the United States Marines Corps to develop smart armor. The company has supplied the Corps with armor tiles that integrate with Solidica's sensing systems, allowing sensors to 'feel' environmental conditions and parameters, such as the temperature and vibration of the vehicles, fuel levels, and weapons systems. For instance, if a military vehicle crashes, a central command post can be made aware almost immediately because of Solidica's technology.
Solidica is also targeting three other markets: earth and geophysical exploration, industrial process monitoring and logistics management. They have expanded into the Asia-Pacific market and hope that their work with the National Science Foundation on business technology transfer will provide more applications for their embedded sensor network technology; in particular, the safety and health monitoring of buildings.
Last year, the company landed a $1.3 million grant from Michigan’s 21st Century Jobs Fund to develop 'smart' joint implants which allow the monitoring of joint deterioration, the delivery of drugs, and the ability to send data gto physicians via wireless networks. This grant will help them work toward developing a prototype device and allow Solidica to move into the medical devices industry.
Honored as One of 'Michigan 50 Companies to Watch', Solidica was also awarded the 2007 Best of Sensors Expo Award for Technology Leadership. Solidica also works with a variety of aerospace, automotive, industrial, medical, and construction companies, including: John Deere, Caterpillar, Boeing, NASA and Adidas.
