Actually, in recent years, downtown's hotter spots have become more abundant and more obvious -- from clubs for booty shaking, a music scene that's the envy of many other cities, and a dining scene that has exploded with celeb chefs and innovative locals. By no means is Detroit a shopping mecca, but don't overlook the new and noteworthy boutiques, day spas and funky shops.

The artist and urbanista is a Detroiter through and through. She loves the city, the art scene, a good German -- vegetarian -- plate, and handmade cool locally made stuff.
